Christian Wilhelm Ernst Ditrich is known as the court painter to King Augustus III at Dresden in which capacity he produced series of highly popular landscapes often based on previous artist’s accomplishments. After 1746 he also functions as Gallery Administrator, Director at the Meissen Factory and Professor. British Museum holds a collection of his engravings which as opposed to the paintings have unique qualities.

Here is a fine 18th century sporting painting depicting a party of riders following likely grey hound dogs who are chasing a large deer. The scene is set in a landscape of rolling hills with a castle tower in the background. Housed in its period rococo frame this picture will compliment any collection of antique fine art.

Windlesham Court, Windlesham, Surrey Jan Vasselijn was born in Dieppe and studied with Esaias van de Velde. He distinguished himself in landscape and animal painting introducing a fresh and clear manner of painting landscapes and is prominently represented in the world’s finest museums.

This figural landscape painting likely depicts the Nymphs of Mt. Nysa awaiting Hermes (Mercury), seen in the sky, to entrust the infant Dionysus (Bacchus) in their care, all set in a classical romantic scenery with a water fountain and a view to a distant hill top cathedral. The theme has been of interest to several of the 16th and 17th century painters most famously Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665). The style of the painting is reminiscent of Annibale Carrachi (1560-1609) but incorporating the elements of French 18th century esthetics.

Son of Johann Heinrich Roos Phillip Peter went to Italy in 1677 and studied with Gicinto Brandi. Roos painted almost exclusively domestic animals with their herdsmen in the Roman Campagna. Roos applied his paint in impastos, rendering the coats, the stance and the movements of each species in a virtuoso manner as in this particularly dramatic work.

A wonderful late 18th century painting depicting a young couple in a romantic situation with two children sleeping watched over by a cupid and an older man sitting in some distance. In the background a shepherd with his sheep and on the hill the view of a castle.

Pedro Nunez de Villavicencio was born and died in Seville. He was trained by Murillo and established with him the Academia de Seville. A painting very similar to this (likely the original) was presented to King Carlos II of Spain as a modello and was sold by Christie’s in London in 2009.
