“Still Life with Flowers in a Blue and White Vase”

Max Carlier is one of the great still life masters of Belgium. He was born in Tourcoing, Belgium in 1872 and died in Schaarbeck in Brabant 1938. Carlier was a painter of the Belgian School who most typically executed still lives of flowers and fruits, but also genre scenes and interiors with equal skill. He lived and kept studio primarily in Brussels, but traveled extensively throughout Europe, especially in Italy. He also lived and worked in Brittany for a period of time. Max Carlier has often been described as a virtuoso artist in keeping with the great Flemish still life and interior traditions reaching back to the early renaissance  and paintings by this internationally listed artist have fetched auction prices in excess of $ 46,000 at Christie’s in New York (October 26, 2005).

Julius Zopf is famous for depicting the majestic nature of his native country in a most romantic way. Several of his works have been sold through Christies and Sotheby’s and have fetched prices between $ 4 and 5,000. This particular painting of great luminosity and detail have a numbered label from the Pasadena Art Institute dated 1952.

 Jean Beauduin is a well known Belgian artist who is included in all major sources of art reference. Frederik Christian Kiaerschou exhibited at the prestigious Charlottenborg Palace after 1826 as well as at other notable exhibitions in Denmark and England. He became a member of the Academies in Copenhagen and Stockholm and was as a professor awarded the Residence of Honor at the Royal Academy. Kiaerschou belonged to the brilliant group of Danish ‘Golden Age Artists’ and is represented in The Royal Museum of Fine Art, the Art Museum of Ribe, the Art Museum of Maribo, the Art Museum of Aarhus and 6 other museums. Here is an exquisite work by this highly acclaimed Scandinavian artist who exhibited at the prestigious Charlottenborg Palace after 1892 as well as at a host of other national and international exhibitions. Carl Olsen studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen and as an apprentice with legendary marine painter Anthon Melbye (1818-1875). Olsen exhibited his excellent marine paintings and seascapes at the prestigious Charlottenborg Palace  1853-1873. Carl Olsen also specialized in ship portraits and is highly in demand by international collectors. This particular painting was exhibited at Charlottenborg 1871! Davenport’s 2010 Edition lists auction prices for works by Carl Olsen up to $ 5,345.

“Through the Old Village”

Peder Knudsen studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen and with legendary P. Bonnat in Paris. Between 1902 and 1918 he lived in Finland. Back in his native country Peder Knudsen exhibited at the trend setting Autumn Exhibition for many  years but he also participated in major exhibitions in Helsinki and Paris, where he lived and kept studio for extended periods of time. Knudsen’s ability to capture light and substance amazes again and again. Fritz Stahr-Olsen studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen and exhibited at the September Exhibition in Copenhagen, in Vienna and Linz in Austria as well as at a host of other major venues. 1882-1899 he was in charge of the decorations at the Royal Theatre in Vienna and studied with Hans Makart. Stahr-Olsen painted mainly landscapes and seascapes often as watercolors which were also very popular. Works by this fine and well listed artist many of which done during expensive travelling in Europe and the Middle East now hang in the legendary Oregaard Museum in Copenhagen.

Otto Bache was one of the greatest Scandinavian genre painters of the 19th and early 20th century. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and exhibited at the prestigious Charlottenborg Palace as well as at a host of international exhibitions receiving Gold medals in Copenhagen, Munich and Paris. Works by Otto Bache hang in the Royal Museum of Fine Art in Copenhagen, the collection of the Royal Danish family and many of the most important museums all over Europe. Bach was known for his paintings of horses an this particular painting could well be a study for a larger work.

Kristian Zahrtmann holds a unique position in Scandinavian 19th and early 20th century art. Glowing and often unusual colors characterize his canvases be it those created in his native country or the many motifs from Italy  where he maintained studio in Civita d’Antino  creating a virtual artist’s colony there  as the mentor for almost an entire generation of young artists. Emil Wennerwald studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen. Of greater importance to the young artist was his attendance to the private art school of legendary Skagen painter P. S. Kroyer. Wennerwald exhibited at the prestigious Charlottenborg Palace after 1882, in Lubeck (Germany) 1895, at the Deer Park Exhibition 1913, in Dresden 1889 and Berlin 1890. He traveled extensively all over Europe and his landscape paintings depicting the regions of Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Norway were popular with large international audiences.  Christian Molsted studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Art, during which period this fine painting was created, and exhibited at the prestigious Charlottenborg Palace after 1885 as well as at a host of other major national and international exhibitions. In 1889 and 1899 he was awarded the Neuhausen Gold Medal. After the Academy Molsted turned into being a much admired marine painter and a museum for him was established in his home town of Dragor. Dai Shubin graduated from the Chinese Art Institute in Beijing 1986. Being admired for his sensitivity and artistic mastery he was soon admitted into the Chinese Artists Association, the Sichuan Artists Association and the Lhasa Artists Association. In Lhasa he became a member of the Tibetan Folklore Artists Group. He exhibited at the First Chinese oil panting Exhibition, the Chinese 17th New Art Exhibition, the Chinese 10th Art Exhibition and a host of galleries in the US, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong etc. This painting was acquired by Mr. Chris Coyne directly from the artist in Lhasa, Tibet, in his effort to create a unique international art collection of the finest humanitarian and artistic qualities.
