Mr. Bonelli was awarded the prestigious scholarship at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts – the Emien Cresson European Travelling Scholarship – allowing him to study art in Europe during the summer of 1939. In 1948 after service during World War II, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. The next year, he earned his master’s degree. Mr. Bonelli taught art at Drexel Institute and at Villanova University. His exhibitions include the City Hall of Philadelphia. James Bonelli died in Palm Beach in 2000 and this work is from his personal collection.
