“The Glowing Town”

By Ann Marie Ekbom (Swedish, b. 1925)

 Ann Marie Ekbom was born in Vasteras (Sweden) and studied at the Ecole Nationale Superiore des Beaux-Arts in Paris where she became part of a post impressionist movement. Returning to her native country she exhibited widely and received several important commissions including architectural decorations. This luminous depiction of a coastal town in the Southern Europe bathed in sunlight demonstrates Ekbom’s unique ability to transform the reality into artistic prominence. Works by Ann Marie Ekbom hang in the Art Museum of Jonkobing (Sweden).

Athens based Georgia Artist Tracy Jefferies is widely represented throughout Georgia including in Ashford Manor and has exhibited her work in New York City, Atlanta and Santa Fe. In describing her work Jefferies states: “My subject matter is what I see and experience daily in nature transformed and memorialized through the act of painting”. In 2008 Tracy Jefferies won much acclaim for her exhibition “Swept Away” in Savannah, Georgia (with Bruce Knecht) and in 2011 “Georgia Green Art Exhibition” staged by Georgia College has works by her hand prominently included. The ‘Clearing Edge Series’ of which this fine painting is a part bring us close up to otherwise unnoticed sights in a way that stimulates and refreshes.

 

“Brightness Ahead”

Based in Athens, GA, Bruce Knecht is widely represented throughout Georgia and has exhibited in New York City, Atlanta, Santa Fee and other major venues. The atmospheric quality of Knecht’s works whether in landscapes or as here ina dynamic figurative painting always invite to explore. He portrays both internal and external properties creating ‘presence’ and depth with gestural vigor and a refined palette. Bruce Knecht’s oeuvre is represented in the Art Museum of Georgia, Athens.

Vacheslav Pereta is an emerging impressionist painter in keeping with the artistic traditions of his native country and Russia. He studied with F. Zakharov in Crimea and later at the Kiev Academy of Art 2002-2008. With vigorous brushstrokes and a subtle palette this artist proves again and again to be among the most promising of his generation. Pereta had his first solo exhibition in 2007 and his talent and popularity have since propelled him into a surprising career with regular and substantial sales at Christie’s and Sotheby’s in London.

Knud Laursen has exhibited widely including at a host of prestigious art venues: The Art Museum of Vanersborg (Sweden), Royal Institute Gallery, London 1968, Monaco 1971, Palais des Beaux-Arts Brussels 1972, San Fransisco 1976, the Art Museum of Frederikshavn etc. Works by his hand are held by the Vanersborg Art Museum, the Art Museum of Hjorring and the Art Museum of Herning (all Denmark).

 

“Harlequin”

Bengt Carlberg studied in Stockholm, Amsterdam and Paris. He exhibited widely in his native country and drawings by him regular appeared in the Swedish newspapers. He became especially known for his circus motifs often involving clown and acrobats and in his biography the focus in on the poetic and atmospheric qualities of his works.

Bengt Carlberg is represented in the Art Museum of Umeaa in Sweden. Davenport’s report an auction record for this artist at $ 3,792 paid for a 10” x 8” watercolor at Bukowski’s Auctions in Stockholm in 2004.

James Couper received a Master’s Degree in painting from Florida State University and became the Head Painting Professor at Florida International University where he taught painting and art history for 25 years. From 1961 on Couper consistently has exhibited at a host of one man shows and group shows receiving many awards, fellowships and grants along the way. From figurative paintings as demonstrated in this particular work Couper later turned to painting the wilderness landscapes of Florida with an emphasis on the environmental challenges facing the Everglades and other natural resources.

Henry Ransom graduated from the University of Georgia with a MFA in 1972. 1965-70 he served to the rank of Captain in the US Army and founded a life long love of Asia. His spirited oeuvre is represented in 5 prominent US art museums (including Mint Museum of Art and Columbus Museum of Art) and his exhibition records includes venues from Atlanta to New York, the National Academy of Design being just one of his notable achievements. Literature: ‘The Artists Bluebook’, ‘Who’s Who in American Art (several editions), ‘The American Collections (Columbus Museum of Art, 1988), ‘American Artists, An Illustrated Survey of Leading Contemporary Americans’ (Les Krantz, 1985).

“Cubist Landscape”

Rolf Norrman was born in Tranaas and died in Hultsfred both in Sweden. He studied with the legendary painter Isaac Grunewald (1889-1946) through whom he got inspired by especially Matisse. He has painted landscapes, portraits and still lives and exhibited widely in Stockholm, Lund and Malmo. Rolf Normann often lived and worked in Spain, where this particular work is painted. Works by this fine classic modernist can be found in Prince Eugen’s Waldemarsudde Museum.

 

 

“Nude Dialogue”

Bjorn Rye grew up in rural Utah constantly exploring nature around him. He received a BA in Art History from Columbia University in 1973 and a MA from NY City College in 1974. Early on Rye started exhibiting at prestigious galleries: landscapes, still lives and figural paintings of an often expressionistic nature uniquely concentrating the essence of form and light. As the Renaissance man he was, Rye also had several novels published as well as managed to travel all over the world in a never ending quest for visual stimuli. In recent years works by this important American artist have fetched international auction prices in excess of $ 6,000 (23” x 47”). This particular work was a much cherished part of the artist’s personal collection until his untimely death.

       

“Ballerina”

Gertrud W.-Lindquist studied in Stockholm, at the Academie la Grande Chaumiere in Paris and at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen. She had her first personal exhibition in Malmo (Sweden) 1944 where after she exhibited frequently at the most prestigious venues. She is represented in the best Scandinavian collections including the Art Museum of Malmo. In later years her soft impressionistic style has been popular with large audiences and it is worth mentioning that a painting by this well listed artist sold at Christie’s in London (1998) for $ 11,809.

   

"Tribal Dance"

Karl Larsen is considered on of Scandinavia's first and most important Expressionists. He was a member of 'The Four" who introduced Expressionism in Copenhagen. He made his debut in 1916 at the 'KE" Exhibition in Copenhagen and the following year at the his picture 'The stairwell' was pronounced 'a sensation' by the critics. Works by this pioneer of modern art are held by Th Royal Museum of Fine Art and other fine collections. Literature: 'Karl Larsen' by Jan Zibrandtsen; 'Modern Dansih Painting' by the same author; 'The New Danish Art History, vol. 6 by Hanne Abildgaard. In 1970 Karl Larsen visited Uganda.
    
“A Good Dog”

Rud Jacobsen studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen and exhibited at the prestigious Charlottenborg Palace after 1919 as well as at a host of other major exhibitions. He is considered a leading member of the ‘Vaerlose School of Artists’ who brought a new sense of modernism into the traditional Turn of the Century concept. He painted mostly landscapes but we also find a number of fine portraits and genre paintings in his oeuvre. This nominated and well listed artist is represented in The Art Museum of Maribo. A dedication by the artist’s wife to her grandson is found on the back of the canvas.
 

“Summer Thoughts”

Here is an intriguing study for a portrait by a distinguished Soviet artist in keeping with the Russian impressionist tradition. Nikolai Dubina studied at the Art Institute of Kiev and later on maintained studio in Donetsk/Stalino, Ukraine. He is known for his ability to catch the personality of the sitter with vigorous brush strokes and intense color. Nikolai Dubina is included in the important book ‘Russian and Soviet Painters’ by British scholar Mattew Cullerne Bown.

Hagedorn was born in Berlin and settled in England 1905. He studied at Manchester School of Technology, Slade and Paris. His modern style in the young years earned him the name 'Manchester's first Modernist'. Karl Hagedorn had a host of successful exhibitions at some of the most prestigious British galleries. Works by his hand hang in the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Manchester City Art Gallery. Public auction records up to $ 20,000.
 

 

Drying in the Early Spring”

 Yakov Ocheretko was born in the Poltava region and graduated from Kiev Institute of Art 1948. He was one of the most popular painters of West Ukraine and his works hang in a host of Ukrainian museums and private collections. He lived and painted in Chernovtsy until his death in the 1980’s.

Ocheretko is included in the book ‘Russian and Soviet Painters 1900-1980’s’ by British scholar Matthew Cullerne Bown.

   
 
 
"The Tiger Girl"

Anita Paulsson studied at the Art Academy in Skane with professors Gunnar Sandin and Gunnar Friberg. She started exhibiting in 1974 (at the St. Gertrud Gallery in Malmo) and soon her talent propelled her into numerous one man shows and awards. Works by her hand hang in the Art Museum of Malmo, the Swedish Parliament and a host of major public collections. This unique painting with all its radiant symbolism brings a lot of joy to the viewer.

"On the Run"

Viggo Madsen studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Copenjhagen and at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He exhibited at the prestigious Charlottenborg Palace after 1904, in New York 1912, in Stockolm 1919 and at several other international exhibitions. In 1932 he was awarded the Soedring Medal. Works by Viggo Madsen are held by the Royal Museum of Fine Art, the legendary Art Museum of Skagen, the Art Museum of Malmo (Sweden) and 3 other art museums.
