Gaston Balande:

Gaston Balande was a French painter and illustrator known for his landscape paintings. Characterized by light-drenched scenes rendered with a lush paint application, Balande’s work was especially influenced by Gustave Courbet and by his experiences traveling amidst the art and scenery of Italy. Born in 1880 in Madrid, Spain to French parents, his family relocated to the Charente region of France when Balande was still a baby. He went on to have a job as a picture restorer as a young man, and taught himself to draw from copying lithographs. His work was seen as a mélange of Édouard Manet, Paul Cézanne, and Pierre Puvis de Chavannesby many critics of his time. Balande’s work can be found in the collections of the Musée d’Orsay and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He died on April 8, 1971 in Paris, France.
