La Grande Mademoiselle was the niece of King Louis XIII and considered the wealthiest woman in Europe. The letter in French likely refers to her planned wedding to the courtier the Duke of Lauzon, a feast that would never take place because of King Louis XIV’s and his queens sudden refusal to permit
