Gordon Grant grew up in San Francisco and at age 12 sailed around the Horn to London, England to study art at the Heatherly and Lambeth Schools. Returning to his native city in the 1890s, he was an illustrator for the Examiner. Grant maintained a studio in New York City throughout most of his career and was active in California as a member and exhibitor of the California Printmakers and California Society of Etchers. He was the author-illustrator of Ships Under Sail (1941) and The Secret Voyage (1943).
